Urban Flood Hazardscape Pattern and Vulnerability Dynamics in Kano Metropolis Kano State Nigeria

  ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT Urban flood is one of the most recurrent and devastating disasters affecting many cities of the world including parts of Kano metropolis. In this study, investigation was carried out to identify flood hazardscape and examine the spatio-temporal dynamics of its vulnerability with a view to implementation of urban vulnerability and risk reduction policies and practice towards sustainable urban development. Impervious surface data were extracted from Landsat images of 2000 and 2018 using example-based feature extraction tool in ENVI 5.3. This was overlaid with reclassified digital elevation model (ASTER DEM 30m) to produce 3 flood vulnerability zones (i.e critically vulnerable, vulnerable and low). World View image (2018) was used as a basemap to depict the vulnerability dynamics. The result from analysis came up with flood hazardscape and spatio-temporal vulnerability dynamics maps for the whole metropolis. There was anincrease in urban flood vulnerability due to persistent increase in impervious surface area (from 121.49 Km2 in 2000 to 238.42 Km2 in 2018) as a result of urban growth and rainfallwhich corresponds to about 5km2 on critically vulnerable area, 50km2 on vulnerable and 64Km2 on low vulnerable locations. Also, presently about 4% of the total impervious surface area (built-up) within the core metropolitan area is critically vulnerable, 36% is liable to flooding depending on rainfall duration and amount and about 60% is not floodable. It was concluded that urban flood vulnerability has been dynamic and influenced by increase in impervious surface area and rainfall. It is recommended that urban flood vulnerability and hazardscape should be considered in planning and updating the city’s future plan for sustainable development.
