MAP ANALYSIS OF FADAMA/WETLAND FARMING FOR SUSTAINABLE DRY SEASON RICE FARMING USING REMOTE SENSING AND GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM GIS IN LAPAL LGA OF NIGER STATE NIGERIA

  ABSTRACT
In this study, Map Analysis on fadama/wetland for sustainable dry season rice farming in Lapai LGA was adopted to generate socio-economic data. The objective of the research was to assess the under-Utilization of fadama/wetland and its implication of the farming method on food security in the study area. Land-sat TM imageries of Lapai LGA between 1990, 2005 and 2015 respectively were acquired, processed and classified using GIS technique/method. Maximum Likelihood Classification Index was adopted while the area was calculated in hectares for the various land uses/land cover for each study year. The land use analysis was done with the Transitional Probability Table While Time Series Analysis wasused to statistically analyze the data. The result shows that in 1990, Fadama/wetlands covered 9.1%, Scattered Cultivation 8.5%. Water-body 7.3%, Built-up area 5.5%, while bare surface was 5.2% and scrublands 3.3%. In 2005 forest plantation coverage decrease to ( 55.18%) , scattered cultivation to (6.33%). built-up increase to (13.44%) , bare/wasted lands and decreased to (4.37%), water bodies increased slightly to (8.77%), fadama/wetland reduced (7.43%),and also reduced to (2.97%) , while in 2015 decrease to 52.6% of forest land cover , increase in scattered cultivation land to 54.8%. The built up area increase to 17.7% of the total land use/ land cover. The bare surface lands also decrease suddenly to 4.01%. The percentage of land cover changes between 1995 and 2015, shows that the fadama/wetland cover has reduced by 2.4% (9.1%-6.67%), while scattered cultivation have reduced by 2.97% (8.5%-5.53%) , while built uplands increase by -12.2 (5.5%-17.7%). Bare surface lands reduced by 1.2% (5.2-4.0%), while water bodies increase by -2.5 (7.3%-9.8%), with scrublands increase by 0.7% (3.3% -2.66%). The overlay analysis of between 1995 and 2005, 2005 and 2015 was done to obtain the Transitional Probability and time series analysis (see Table 5 and6). This indicates that there were significant changes between 1990 to 2005, and 2015. This revealed thatfadama/wetland continue to diminish rapidly in the study area. It was based on this findings that this recommended was done. Among these recommendations were: the Government should intensify efforts in protecting fadama/wetland from extinction and under-Utilization, in order to produce large quantity of dry season rice for sustainable economic development of the state to mitigate food security problems.
