EFFECTS OF WEATHER VARIABILITY ON CASSAVA PRODUCTION IN BWARI AREA COUNCIL FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY ABUJA NIGERIA

  ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT Weather variability is one of the serious environmental challenges that have received a lot of public outcry in most parts of the world due to its consequence on agriculture, energy and industry. This study examined the effects of temperature and rainfall on cassava production in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria. The study determined the trend and variability of temperature and rainfall of Bwari Area Council over the past 20 years (1998-2018); examined the effects of temperature and rainfall on cassava production in the study area; and predicted future changes in temperature and rainfall of the study area from 2018-2038.Temperature and rainfall data for the period of 1998-2018 was collected from the Nigeria Meteorological agency, Abuja. Analytical tools such as Cross-tabulation, Chi-square, Hierarchical multiple regression, trend equations and graphs were used to analyze the quantitative data. Results showed that maximum temperature had some statistically significant negative relationship with cassava yield. It was also revealed that temperature and rainfall were statistically significant with temperature showing a higher beta value (beta = -.79, P < .05) than that of rainfall (beta= -.27, P< .05). The trends in both projected mean annual maximum and minimum temperature for the period 2018-2038 shows an increasing trend. It was further revealed that annual cassava outputs for the period 2018-2038 are expected to oscillate from 1800 to 2189 kilogram per hectare per year. It is recommended that heat resistant cassava species be developed by the Crops Research Institute of Nigeria.
