ASSESSMENT OF SOME NUTRIENTS NO3, N02, NH3, PO43, AND SULPHATES SO42, SO32, IN ITU IBENO AND IBAKA RIVERS OF AKWA IBOM STATE NIGERIA
Surface water enrichment is an ecological problem in Nigeria as well as the entire universe. The study was aimed at assessing the nutrients (NO3-,NO2-,NH3, PO43-) and Sulphates (SO42-,SO32- ) in Itu, Ibeno and Ibaka Rivers of Akwa ibom state, Nigeria. Standard laboratory procedures were adopted for determination of phosphate (PO3-4), colorimetric method for nitrite content, cadmium reduction procedure for nitrate content, phenate spectrophotometric for nitrogen and ammonia determination, UV-visible-spectrophotometer for hydrogen sulphite determination and turbidimeter for determination of other anions. From the results, Itu river recorded the highest concentration of Nitrate (32.09mg/l), Ibaka river had the highest concentration of Ammonia (2.42mg/l), Ibaka river had the highest concentration of Total Nitrogen (28.26mg/l) and Ibeno river recorded the highest concentration of Sulphate (244.75mg/l). The Ibaka river had the highest concentration of Phosphate (21.20mg/l), Itu river had the highest concentration of Hydrogen sulphite (106.80mg/l). Parameters analysed recorded increase in percentage concentration in the following order: Ammonia with 0.3%, Nitrite with 2.3%, Phosphate with 2.7%, then Total Nitrogen with percentage concentration of 4.6%, Nitrate with 7.2%, Hydrogen sulphite with 30.8% and Sulphate with 52.2% in the three rivers samples. The result recorded a significant relationship between Ammonia and Phosphate at 5% level of significance.The high level of sulphate, Hydrogen sulphite, nitrate and nitrogen concentrations in the rivers could be due to anthropogenic activities in which the waste water finds its way into these water bodies
