AN ASSESSMENT OF ROLE OF INFRASTRUCTURE PROVISION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF OGBONICHA COMMUNITY OFU LGA KOGI STATE NIGERIA

  ABSTRACT
Infrastructures play a significant role in the development of rural communities. The study examined the place of public infrastructure provision on the development of Ogbonicha community with the objectives of examining the nature and availability of the public infrastructure provision in the study area, to determine the pattern of distribution and accessibility of infrastructural facilities in the area and to examine the efficiencies and effectiveness of infrastructure provision and how it has encouraged rural development in the study area. Administration of structured questionnaire as well as personal observation were used to obtain data for the study. The data were presented using tables with percentages and ranking scores of various infrastructure categories, their functionality and distribution. Nearest Neighborhood Analysis (NNA) was used to determine the pattern of infrastructural distribution while ANOVA was used to test the postulated hypothesis. The result shows that the inhabitants major source of water is private well (24.2%), average duration of electricity power supply in a week is between 1-2 hour (74.8%), most of the inhabitants used private generator to argument power supply (55.2%), the primary health care (46.8%) is the dominant health care facility in the area, minimum distance to health facilities is between 1-500m. The borehole/water (20.8%) was ranked as the most efficient facility in the area. The outcome of the NNA shows both randomness and dispersed distribution pattern of infrastructural facilities while the Hypothesis revealed that there is a significant relationship between public infrastructure provision and rural development. It is therefore recommended that concerted efforts should be made by both government and the community to vigorously embrace the provision of infrastructure in the area. Maintenance culture should be a watch dog among the inhabitants of the community to ensure a prolonged durability, functionality and sustainability of the current facilities in the area.
