AN ASSESSMENT OF HEALTH CHALLENGES AND IMPLICATIONS OF THE TRENDS OF COVID 19 PANDEMIC IN NIGERIA

  ABSTRACT
The current outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic across the world, with an alarming increasing number of cases in Nigeria, calls for urgent attention. The aim of this paper is to examine the pattern of the trend in the spread of the pandemic in Nigeria between the 29th of February and the 10th of July, 2020 and to equally assess the associated challenges and implications. The data used for this study include; 2020 COVID-19 situation reports and hard copy of the map of Nigeria sourced from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Portal and Federal Ministry of Works, Power and Housing, Ibadan respectively. Both the descriptive statistics and Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques were the methods of analysis adopted for the study. The GIS software used was the ArcGIS 10.0. The result shows that there has been an upward trending in the geographical spread of the pandemic nationwide (from 1 confirmed case in the month of February to 31,323 as at 10th of July, 2020) representing an increase of 99.9%. Findings also show that Lagos state has the highest number of the pandemic cases as at the 10th of July, 2020 making it the epicenter of the pandemic. As the pandemic persists, , the health care challenges plaguing Nigeria’s already frail health system have been exacerbated and health care workers are struggling. Therefore, there is urgent need in strengthen the health sector capacity by government at all levels to be able to cope with the upward trending of the pandemic in the country.
