AN ANALYSIS OF THE FACTORS AND EFFECTS OF GULLY EROSION IN CHIKUN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA KADUNA KADUNA STATE

  ABSTRACT
The development of gullies is one of the environmental problems in Chikun local government area, Kaduna State. In this research therefore, the authors assessed the controlling factors and effects of gully erosion in Chikun local government area. The objectives were to identify and map the spatial distribution of gully erosion sites in the study area, estimate the amount of soil loss in the study area using soil loss estimation model of South Africa (SLEMSA) and assess factors controlling gully erosion in the study area as well as examine the menace of gully erosion in the area. Data used in this study were derived from field observation, Quick Bird imagery; soil samples were collected from the study sites and were analyzed. The nine gully erosion sites identified in the course of the study were all mapped as major gullies. The estimated annual amount of soil loss ranges from 1.3ton/ha/yr to 48tons/ha/yr, the controlling factors of gully erosion shows that slope (56%) had the highest on gully erosion in the study area. The effect of gully erosion in the study area is in form of loss of lands, houses, economic trees and lives. It is concluded that in some areas, a single factor may have an overwhelming effect than others leading to large differences in the estimated soil loss among the research sites.
